Chalet Bergfried is situated in the village of Thumersbach, on the sunny side of the Zeller lake. The lake is just a few minutes walk from the chalet. At the lake in Thumersbach there is a beach and swimming pool. In spring and summer you can hire pedal boats, rowing boats, water-skis, sailing dinghys and more.

Zell am See is a short drive / bus ride away but you can also catch a ferry across the lake to the centre of Zell Am See or take a motor boat tour. If you like to cycle you can hire a bike locally and take the cycle path around the lake instead.

At Zell am See there are even more activities including, bowling, iceskating, tennis, indoor and outdoor pools, gliding, and horse riding

Walking & Hiking

At Zell am See there are several cable cars and chairlifts that operate during the summer months. These are an ideal way to reach the excellent walks and views from the Schmittenhöhe mountain or just relax at the restaurant. If you prefer the lowlands there are some beautiful walks along the lakeside with superb views across the lake to the Schmittenhöhe and Kitzsteinhorn mountains. At the tourist office you can find out about guided walks.

From the Schmittenhöhe mountain you can see a spectacular view of 200 peaks. For more energetic walkers the Hundstein (2118m) is a 4 hour walk from Bergfried.

Zell am See is a paradise for winter sports. Together with Kaprun it forms the Europa Sportregion; with 132km of pistes and 56 lifts. There are adult and childrens ski schools, ski kindergarten, toboggan runs, cross-country ski tracks, winter hiking paths and a skating rink. When the winter is cold enough there is skating on the lake. The main lift station and ski school in Zell am See (City Express) is just 5 minutes drive away but why drive when there is a free skibus from right outside the door to all skiing areas.

Golfclub Zell am See offers not one but two Donald Harradine designed courses. The 36 fairways and greens are perfectly maintained and nestled in the surrounding mountains provide an amazing panorama.

During the summer Zell am See has the famous Lake Festivals, with spectacular firework displays.
